Tear the mold making box off, exposing the mold. Pull the object out of the rubber mold. To make molds in 2-parts, move on to the next step. Make a containment box for your mold using your measurements.
If you used clay, you can pop the pieces out while the clay is still wet. If you used resin, however, you must allow the resin to cure completely before removing it. Press the item you wish to mold into the putty. Make sure that you are pressing it design-side-down into the mold, and that the back is visible. Use your fingers to push the edges of the mold against the item; you do not want to see any gaps.
Can I use plaster of Paris to make a hand mold?
As soon as it has melted completely, carefully pour the wax into the hollow left by the sand.Wear gloves when pouring hot wax. Tie a candle wick or braided cotton string onto a dowel, and lay the dowel over the bucket. Gently loosen the wax hand by sliding your un-waxed pinky finger under the wrist. Once it starts to loosen, dip it under the water level to help it glide off.
The set up requires a little bit of planning, but it’s not difficult to do and once ready, the wax hands are very easy to make. Also, this doubles as a spa treatment, which means even if the mold fails, you’ll have smooth hands. Once the plaster has cured for 30 minutes, you can safely disassemble the mold.
How do you imprint a baby’s hand?
Mix up a batch of rubber compound according to the package instruction. Paint a thin layer of the compound over the face of the object, then place the object into the box and fill the box with the rest of the rubber compound. Once the compound sets, tear apart the box and take the object out of the mold.
To combat the air bubbles rising to the surface, spray the top of the resin with a releasing agent. Smooth and scrape off any excess resin with a metal putty knife. Allow the resin to set for the time specified in your product’s instructions.
How do you make a homemade hand casting kit?
Hold the silicone mold by the edges, and gently bend it back and away from your item. Flip the mold over to pop the item out. If you need to, use your fingers to pry the item out. Start by rolling the silicone putty into a ball between your palms. Next, place it on a smooth surface, and gently press down on it to flatten it slightly.
You can insert a wick thread through the hole to wick your candles later. Pour until the top surface of the model has been covered. We recommend about ½ inch above the top surface. Make sure the container is empty, dry, and clean.
It is best for molding extremely complex shapes where the silicone needs to be flexible to allow parts to be removed or to account for undercuts. A 2-part pour mold is similar to a 1-part mold however instead of leaving one side open it is sealed off with another half of silicone. A runner is placed in one end to allow an opening in the mold for casting material to be poured into later.
To make your hollow wax hands last longer, fill them with casting plaster. This can be purchased from a hobby retailer. Once the wax is set, you can dig out the sand around it, or place a plastic bag over the mouth of the bucket and slowly tip the whole thing over. You may need to trim the wax hand if it's seeped out of the original hollow, or scrape it slightly to uncover the wick. Once that's done, your hand candle is complete. To make a solid wax hand you can use as a candle, you'll need a bucket of damp sand, a dowel, and a candle wick.
Carefully remove the clay, leaving the rubber mold half intact. Once hard, I'll impress another set of sticky playdough for a reverse impression. However with this sticky playdough recipe, what makes it great for casting is that it is so soft and will enventually dry rock hard. Fold the edges of the tape over the sides of the container. Once you fill the container with silicone, there is a small chance that some may leak out from under the tape.
Don't fill the mold, but spread it equally against the inner surface and wait for it to dry. Reusable molding material is not for high temperature casting, but can be remelted. Measure out your silicone according to the manufacturer's instructions. You will always have mix Part A and Part B together. Some types of silicone are supposed to be measured by volume, while others need to be measured by weight. Read the instructions that came with your silicone closely, then measure them accordingly.Pour the silicone into the cup included with your kit.
